Do you know about half of Hong Kong people aged 15 and above are overweight or obese? If you are overweight, it means your weight is above what is considered normal or healthy for your height and age. If you are obese, it means you are so fat that it is a danger to your health. Hong Kong people don’t exercise enough, eat too much salt, and eat junk food in fast-food restaurants too often. That’s why over half of them aged 15 and above are obese or overweight. People who are obese have a high chance of heart disease. Junk food is unhealthy food such as French fries and hamburgers from fast-food restaurants.
I very seldom eat junk food even though I love hamburgers. If I want to eat a hamburger I will have it at the Foreign Correspondents’ Club where the hamburgers are grilled and made from lean meat. Lean meats are meats with very low fat content, such as chicken breast. But even though I no longer eat potato chips, and rarely eat French fries, hamburgers, and pizzas, which are my favorite foods, I still received some bad news from my doctor last week. My blood tests showed I have very high cholesterol. I was surprised because I eat very healthy foods and am not overweight or obese. Unfortunately, high cholesterol runs in my family.
If something runs in your family, it means many of your family members have it. For example, if cancer runs in a family, it means many in the family have a high risk of getting it. There are two types of cholesterol – good and bad. My bad cholesterol is very high but luckily my good cholesterol is also very high. The doctor told me not to worry. He said it was not necessary to take medicine at this stage but advised me to exercise more and avoid red meats such as beef. I seldom eat beef but will exercise more. I have to do another blood test in six months. After I saw the doctor, I bought vegetarian hamburgers!
你可知道，香港十五歲及以上的人當中，約有一半是過重（overweight）或癡肥的（obese）？若你是overweight，即是說你的體重超過了你身高和年齡的正常或健康標準；若你是obese，即是你肥胖到會危害你的健康。香港人做不夠運動，吃得過鹹，也太常在快餐店吃垃圾食物（junk food）。因此，十五歲及以上的人中，有超過一半的人是肥胖（obese）或過重（overweight）的。肥胖（obese）的人患上心臟病的機率較高。Junk food就是不健康的食物，例如快餐店的炸薯條和漢堡包。
我雖然很愛吃漢堡包，但我很少會吃垃圾食物（junk food）。若我想吃個漢堡包，我會在香港外國記者會(見圖)吃，那裏的漢堡包是烤的，而且用的是瘦肉（lean meat）。Lean meat就是含很少脂肪的瘦肉，例如雞胸。然而，即使我不再吃薯片，也甚少吃我最愛的薯條、漢堡包和薄餅，上星期仍然從醫生那裏收到個壞消息：我的驗血報告顯示，我有很高的膽固醇。我感到很意外，因為我吃的已是非常健康的食物，也不算超重（overweight）或癡肥（obese）。不幸地，高膽固醇runs in my family。
若某事runs in your family，即是說那是你的家族遺傳，你許多家庭成員都有。例如，若cancer runs in a family，那就是說一個家族中有許多人都是患癌的高危人士。膽固醇亦分為兩種：好膽固醇和壞膽固醇。我的壞膽固醇很高，幸而我的好膽固醇亦同樣很高。醫生叫我不用擔憂，他說現階段不需要吃藥，但建議我多做運動，戒吃牛肉之類的紅肉。我很少吃牛肉，但會多做點運動。我會在六個月之後再驗血。我見完醫生後，便去買了個素肉漢堡！
