When I told my friends I had started intermittent fasting to get rid of my big belly （stomach）, they gave me blank looks. A blank look is a facial look that shows no expression or emotion. A good poker player always has a blank look so other players cannot tell from his facial expression what cards he holds. But giving you a blank look can also mean people are confused by or don't understand what you're telling them. My friends gave me blank looks because they had never heard of intermittent fasting. They told me they had heard of the Atkins Diet to reduce weight but not intermittent fasting.
The Atkins Diet is a low carbohydrate diet. People who follow this diet can eat only fatty and high-protein foods such as meat. They cannot eat foods with carbohydrates such as bread, fruit, and most vegetables. This forces the body to burn fat, causing weight loss. Intermittent fasting, as I explained in my previous column, means not eating food for a period of time, then eating again, and then not eating again. The type I chose requires fasting for 16 hours. I finish dinner at 8pm daily, do not eat breakfast the next morning except for tea and coconut water, and then have lunch at 12 noon. This lets me fast for 16 hours daily.
My friends asked how intermittent fasting can help weight loss. I explained that people eat three or four times a day but it takes the body about two days to excrete food waste. If you are always eating, your body is always digesting food. Before your body can digest breakfast, you are already eating lunch. Your digestive system needs a rest so your body can use its natural healing powers to do other things. Intermittent fasting gives your digestive system a rest. This will let your body do things such as cleaning your digestive system, which could get rid of your big belly. I am not sure it will work but I want to try it.

當我告訴我的朋友，我已開始了間歇性斷食（intermittent fasting）去減走我的大肚腩（belly）時，他們都一臉茫然（blank looks）。A blank look是指沒有任何表情或情緒的樣子。一個好的撲克玩家總是木無表情（blank look），以致其他對手不能從他的面部表情猜出他手中拿的是甚麼牌。但給你一個blank look 也可以是指人們對你所說的事情感到困惑，又或不明所以。我的朋友們一臉茫然（blank looks），因為他們從未聽聞過間歇性斷食（intermittent fasting）。他們跟我說，曾聽說過用阿特金斯飲食法（Atkins Diet）去減重，但就沒聽過間歇性斷食（intermittent fasting）。
阿特金斯飲食法（Atkins Diet）是低澱粉質飲食，依隨這套飲食法的人，只能吃富含脂肪和高蛋白質的食物如肉類，不能吃澱粉質食物如麵包、水果以及大部份的蔬菜，這會逼使身體燃燒脂肪，令體重下降。而間歇性斷食（intermittent fasting），正如我在上一個專欄中解釋過，是指有一段時間斷食，然後又進食，接着又再斷食。我選擇的一種是要斷食（fasting）十六小時。我每天晚上八時就吃完晚飯，次天早上不吃早餐，只喝茶和椰子水，然後中午十二時再吃午飯。這樣我每天就斷食（fast）了十六小時。
朋友們問我，間歇性斷食（intermittent fasting）怎樣幫助減磅？我就解釋道，人們每天吃三至四餐，但其實身體需要差不多兩天去排出食物殘渣。若你總在吃東西，你的身體便一直在消化食物。你的身體消化好早餐之前，你便已經在吃午餐了。你的消化系統需要休息一會，好讓你的身體去用它的自然療瘉能力去做別的事。間歇性斷食（intermittent fasting）讓你的消化系統得以休息，讓你的身體去做事，例如去淨化你的消化系統，那就能擺脫你的大肚腩（belly）了。我不肯定那是否奏效，但我想試一試。
