又中又英——Not My Thing

Football is the world’s most popular sport. It has over four billion fans. But football is not my thing because I’m not into sports. If something is not your thing, it means you are not very good at it and not very interested in it. The expression “not into” something is similar to the expression “not my thing”. If you’re not into something, it means you are not interested in it. I am not into sports because I am not very good at them. I didn’t play sports when I was young except for baseball, but I was lousy at it! My hobbies were reading books and collecting stamps.

Last week, the German Consul General in Hong Kong Dieter Lamlé invited me to his home to meet some famous German football players. The players are called the legends of Borussia Dortmund. Even though I am not into football I have heard about Borussia Dortmund because it is a well-known German football team. The word “legend” used this way means someone very famous and admired. The players I met are called legends because they are very famous and admired former players for Dortmund. They are not players for the current Dortmund team but still play with other former Dortmund players against other football teams.

They were in Hong Kong last week for a match against legends from the Liverpool team. I have also heard of Liverpool even though I am not into football. The Liverpool players who played against the legends of Dortmund last week were also not in the current Liverpool team. The Dortmund legends I met last week were Florian Kringe, Roman Weidenfeller, and Karl-Heinz Riedle. They were very friendly and not arrogant at all. If you are arrogant, it means you are proud and think you are very important. I chatted (talked in a friendly way) with the three players and took many pictures with them. They did not mind at all. After meeting the legends of Dortmund, I will get into football, which means to become interested in football.

  足球是世上最受歡迎的運動,有超過四十億球迷。然而,足球不是我杯茶(not my thing),因為我不太熱衷(not into)體育運動。若某事「is not your thing」,意思即是你不太擅長某事,又或者對它興趣不大。習語「not into」something跟習語「not my thing」的意思相近;若你是「not into something」,意即你對某事不感興趣。

mickchug@gmail.com
